Review

Recently my daughter took our grandchildren to a local studio for some B&W images. To my surprise she was told that because she wanted the photos in black & white there would be an additional fee, which she agreed to pay. When the proofs came back I was disappointed. Seems the photographer used the same lighting, posing and backgrounds as with their ‘standard’ color sessions. This technique just didn’t work.

That’s what caught my attention to another great new book by Helen Boursier “Photographing Children In Black & White”. Helens use of lighting and backgrounds are specifically suited to the black & white medium. Boursier, who works exclusively in this medium, leads the reader through all the equipment, steps and techniques needed to produce outstanding children’s images.

There are sections covering every age group from tots to teens and posing tips for groups and singles. “Photographing Children In Black & White” is a solid well-organized and photographed offering. If you’re looking to improve your children’s images and want some valuable advice from an expert don’t miss this book. I hope my local studio makes it ‘required reading’ for all their photographers.
