Course Outline & Syllabus
The Studio
by Brian Ratty

Sooner or later, every photographer thinks about having their own studio, their own space, where you can plan and control every step in the picture making process.

The studio photographer is a different breed. They don稚 stand passively on the sidelines recording events as they happen like, say, a photojournalist. No, the studio photographers stage their own events. And they do this from scratch. They start with an image in their imagination, then using studio techniques and tools, they carefully and deliberately recreates that image on film. And they do this in an environment, which is a designed for one thing only-making photographs.

In this workshop we値l look at the studio, especially at lighting for the studio. To start with, we値l cover some general principles of studio design, and we値l see how a basic all-purpose studio should be laid out. Next, we値l look at studio lighting and the equipment used to control and manipulate light. Then we値l cover cameras, tripods and
maintenance for the studio. And finally, we値l deal with product and people photography in the studio.
