| Lioness With Cub Kruger
NP South Africa Aug. 94 It was the last morning of a ten week trip to Africa. We noticed a car pulled to the side of the road so we pulled in behind them.(they soon left) Back from the road sat a lioness, with her cub lying to the side! They were in a clearing about 70ft from the road. Within minutes the mother laid down and the cub placed its paws over the mothers. Quickly I put on my 2x teleconverter to make it a 600 5.6. They were full frame in the lens. It was so beautiful with the morning light. I was so excited I forgot to close down the aperture to give it more depth of field. Canon Eos 1Nbody, Canon300 2.8 Canon 2x converter, bean bag tripod and Fuji film. |
| Grizzly Bear
Denali NP Alaska Aug.94 Riding in a school bus, (thats how you get around in Denali NP.) we came upon this grizzly feeding on blue berries to fatten up for the winter. (they need to consume at least 20,000 calories per day to gain weight) I had my new 300mm 2.8 lens with Eos1 body. There was to much commotion on the bus to shoot, so I waited. I knew I could get off the bus 2 miles down the road so I did, and walked back. Luckily the bear was still feeding on the berries. I set up my bogen tripod w/ball head on the side of the road and patiently watched. He finally got curious enough to give me a glance, I got two shots off and he walked away! Now all I had to find another bus with hopefully a spare seat for all my gear! Film-Fuji |
| Dall Sheep Ram Denali
NP Alaska Aug. 94 I had climbed Margaret mountain a few times before looking for rams on the same cliffs I was on. On the fourth try, I found four rams! I worked them for more than three hours, slowly inching my way closer and closer. My main lenses were the 300mm 2.8. and 100mm 2.8. It was such an experience being so close and watching them in their native environment. Film-Fuji |
Bull Elk/Harem Jasper NP Alberta Canada Oct. 94 I heard the bull elk bugeling to his harem on an embankment above me. I watched, with my camera and 300mm lens on a bogen tripod, as he herded the cows down the embankment, across the road and into the river. The cows started swimming across the river with him in pursuit. I turned the camera vertical and was able to start capturing the moment, just then I ran out of film! But I was able to reload my camera before they swam to the other bank. It was so exciting to witness such an event. |

| Bald Eagle Chilkat
Eagle Sanctuary Alaska Nov. 93 I drove to Seattle, then flew to Haines Alaska. I borrowed a friends Nikon 6006 and rented a Nikon 300mm 2.8 lens. I saw another photographer I had met in Brooks Falls Alaska the year before and he lent me his 2x converter for all my eagle shots. I would be there for four days. There were 3500 eagles in the area but with 40 mph winds blowing around and a wind-chill of -35 they were hard to find. Finally we managed to find a couple up in trees feeding on dead salmon from the late year salmon run. |
| Elwha River Washington
Nov 93 A winter storm followed me to Seattle. We had five inches of fresh snow on the peninsula. I was on my way to Crescent lake when I drove over the Elwha River. The trees around the river were blanketed in white powder. But I was in a hurry so I decided to hand hold the camera. Canon A1 with a Tokina 28mm. I tried use the bridge as my tripod. All night long I kept thinking I should of used a real tripod! So the next morning I drove back 25 miles to the bridge! I got out my slik tripod, and shot the scene all over again. Im so glad I did!! |

| Howling Wolf Captive
bred Montana. June 94 I wanted a female wolf howling with the sunrise behind her. Having wolf pups in the truck of my car they soon started howling with her, than wild coyotes started yipping and howling! I used a Canon Eos1, 100mm 2.8 lens and bogen tripod. Film-velvia |
